Brian Wiens

Art director, Gardner Design

It’s a little like father, like son for Wiens.

Brian’s father, Nolan Wiens, worked for advertising agency Sullivan Higdon Sink while Brian was growing up, “so I kind of knew that from early childhood,” he said.

Wiens, 30, interned for both SHS and another agency, the Greteman Group, while attending Wichita State University. After college, he worked for the Jajo agency before moving to Gardner Design a little more than three years ago.

“I was kind of a natural problem solver. I think that’s what design and creativity is, problem solving for your client and coming up with the right solution.”

As a graphic designer, Wiens has done work for RedGuard (formerly A Box 4 U), Cargill, Cessna, WSU and other clients. Wiens said he’s still doing design work, but his recent promotion to art director gives him added long-term responsibility.

“A designer can sometimes fall into the project-to-project deal, where an art director can have control over a group of projects. You’re more proactive, looking at it holistically and guiding it.”

Outside work, Wiens enjoys creating art for its own sake – “It’s a passion” – and working out with the Shocker Fitness exercise program at WSU, which meets early in the morning at Cessna Stadium.

“I’m an early riser.”
