The summer months are heating up and without a fan or air-conditioning unit, some Wichita families will suffer, said Emily Juhnke, a spokeswoman with the Salvation Army in Wichita.

The Salvation Army’s annual fan drive begins July 19 and runs until Aug. 3. Donors can visit the Westlake Ace Hardware, 8829 W. Central, and donate cash that will be used to purchase fans, according to a news release from the Salvation Army. A $20 donation will purchase a box fan, the release said.

People who have low incomes, are elderly, are qualified families with children or are adults with disabilities are eligible to receive a donated fan, Juhnke said.

“The hottest part of the summer can be really difficult,” she said, “especially if they don’t have reliable air conditioning. … And (the heat) also poses real health dangers.”

The Salvation Army will host a kickoff celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at the Westlake Ace Hardware, which also will donate 50 fans to the drive. People can donate money to the drive at the celebration, the news release said. Refreshments will be served.
