Two Wichitans are among 14 people who have applied to fill a vacancy on the Kansas Supreme Court, according to a news release Thursday from the Office of Judicial Administration.

Wichita lawyer Linda Kirby and Anthony Powell, a Kansas Court of Appeals judge, submitted their applications for the vacant seat. They are candidates to fill the vacancy created by the July 28 resignation of Justice Nancy Mortiz, who was appointed to serve on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Applicants will be interviewed by the Supreme Court Nominating Committee, the release said, Aug. 4 and 5 in Topeka. Interviews are open to the public.

The committee will select three names to submit to Gov. Sam Brownback, who will then fill the Supreme Court vacancy, the release said.

The other nominees are: Karen Arnold-Burger, judge, Overland Park; Victor Braden, lawyer, Lawrence; Daniel Creitz, judge, Erie; Dennis Depew, lawyer, Neodesha; David Klaassen, lawyer, Marquette; Thomas Malone, judge, Topeka; Anthony Mattivi, lawyer, Topeka; Steven Montgomery, judge, Spring Hill; Steven Obermeier, lawyer, Olathe; Curtis Roggow, lawyer, Shawnee; Caleb Stegall, judge, Lawrence; and Merlin Wheeler, judge, Emporia.
