Automobilia rolls into downtown

The 20th annual Automobilia Moonlight Car Show and Street Party is on for Saturday in downtown Wichita. The event, which Automobilia gift store owners Gary and Lorita Carpenter started in 1995, will feature close to 1,000 vintage, classic and current cars plus seven bands, three food courts and – new this year – air-conditioned portable toilets. An average of 140,000 people attend the event. It will happen from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday in an area from Douglas to Second between Broadway and Mosley. Admission is free for spectators. One change this year: Gary Carpenter has ended the moonlight cruise, a parade of cars through downtown that has always been part of the event, because people not associated with the car show were joining in, spinning tires and causing other trouble, he said.

Drums Across Kansas

Drums Across Kansas, the annual event that features seven drum and bugle corps competing at Cessna Stadium, makes its return on Tuesday. It starts at 7 p.m. at Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus. Among the groups competing: 15-time world champion Blue Devils from Concord, Calif., plus the Madison Scouts, the Blue Knights, the Troopers, the Oregon Crusaders, the Academy and the Mandarins. Several young Kansans are among the musicians that make up the competing teams. Tickets are $15, $25 and $45 at www.drumsacrosskansas.com or at Senseney Music, 2300 E. Lincoln.

Kansas Wheat Festival in Wellington

The Kansas Wheat Festival, an annual citywide post-harvest celebration in Wellington, started Wednesday and continues through Sunday with food-eating contests, a parade, a carnival, ice cream socials, an arts and crafts show, a car show and street dances. Admission is a $3 festival button, available at the events or at any Wellington bank or credit union. For a complete schedule, visit www.wellingtonks.org, and for questions, call the Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce at 620-326-7466.
