A 3-year-old boy was placed in protective custody early Wednesday morning after his mother refused to pick him up from a police substation, authorities said.

A 34-year-old man brought the boy to Patrol West at about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, saying he could not take care of the child, Lt. Dan East said. The man said the boy’s mother, his 27-year-old roommate of two weeks, had stormed out of their residence near Hillside and Ross Parkway at about 5 p.m. after an argument.

“Officers could not get her to take custody” of the boy after they contacted her, East said.

The incident remains under investigation, he said.
