The Kansas Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed murder convictions against two Sedgwick County residents, Kevin L. Brown and Kiara M. Williams, the court said.
According to court records, the murder occurred after Brown sought revenge against Otis Bolden for perceived sexual transgressions against his girlfriend, Jalessa Bonner, and her friend, Williams. The killing occurred at a southeast Wichita apartment.
Brown and his cousin Quartez Brown went to Bolden’s apartment, accompanied by the two women, the court records said. The Brown cousins entered and assaulted Ashley Green with a firearm and fatally shot Bolden, the court records said. All four participants were prosecuted. Bonner entered a plea.
The men told police they became upset when Bonner told Kevin Brown she’d met Bolden the night before and suspected him of taking part in a gang rape of her two years earlier. She testified that Bolden made comments leading her to believe he took part in that attack.
Kevin Brown told police he and Quartez Brown took guns to Bolden’s apartment, in the 1500 block of South Webb Road. They arrived just before noon on April 26, 2010. Bonner and Williams waited in the car.
The Browns found Bolden in his bedroom that morning; five shots were fired. Four shots hit Bolden in the back as he jumped out of a window. He died in the yard of the apartments.
Kevin Brown was convicted of felony murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault. Williams was convicted of felony murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault.
