A three-vehicle collision on K-42 next to Cessna Aircraft late Monday afternoon sent a 20-year-old man to a Wichita hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

The injured man was driving a Toyota Prius when he pulled out in front of a Chevy pickup traveling west on K-42 at about 5:07 p.m., Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. David Mattingly said. The pickup broadsided the Prius, which then struck a Honda Accord in the median waiting to turn west.

The Prius continued sliding across eastbound lanes of K-42 and came to rest in the south ditch, pinning the driver in the vehicle, Mattingly said. The driver, who is from Michigan, was extricated by the Wichita Fire Department and transported by ambulance to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition.

He was upgraded to serious condition at the hospital on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for St. Francis said.

No other injuries were reported in the collision, Mattingly said.
