Three children were placed in protective custody by police Saturday night after their mother initially reported the oldest as a runaway, authorities said.

A woman called to report her 15-year-old daughter had run away at about 10 p.m. Saturday from their house on Magnolia, south of Pawnee and just west of McLean Boulevard, according to a police report. The girl was later found at another house, where she told police she didn’t want to return home because she feared being abused.

Officers went to her home, where they found poor living conditions, Lt. Dan East said. The teen, her 7-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister were taken into protective custody.

The case remains under investigation.
