Police officers in Arkansas City are investigating a stabbing that left a 44-year-old man dead and a 23-year-old man in the Cowley County jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

The 44-year-old has been identified as Leonard D. Daniels of Arkansas City.

The stabbing happened shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of South A Street in Arkansas City.

Police were notified of a domestic disturbance when a 31-year-old woman called 911, reporting that her estranged husband had come home and that she heard gunshots. She told police she ran from the house and was calling from a neighbor’s house, according to a news release issued on Facebook by the Arkansas City Police Department.

Shortly after the woman called, the Cowley County Emergency Communications 911 received another phone call from a neighbor on East Madison in Arkansas City saying a 44-year-old man was lying in the street with injuries.

Daniels was transported to the South Central Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City for treatment but died soon afterward.

According to the news release, officers learned while investigating the stabbing that after the woman discovered her estranged husband in the house, the two argued. A 23-year-old man who was a friend of the woman’s approached the arguing couple and allegedly stabbed the 44-year-old man in the back, according to police. The man fired several gunshots at the 23-year-old, grazing him once with a bullet, police said.

The younger man then reportedly ran from the house as the woman gathered her 12-year-daughter and ran to the neighbor’s home.
