A poll conducted this week shows Rep. Mike Pompeo holding a 17-point lead over challenger Todd Tiahrt in the Republican primary race for the 4th Congressional District.

Pompeo leads 51 percent to Tiahrt’s 34 percent, with 16 percent undecided. The margin of error was 4.3 percent.

SurveyUSA conducted the poll for KSN-TV, a Wichita station.

Pompeo is seeking a third term. Tiahrt brings strong name recognition to the race after having served as the district’s representative from 1995 to 2011 before making an unsuccessful bid for a U.S. Senate seat. The primary is Aug. 5.

The poll showed Pompeo the strongest among conservatives with a 27-point lead – 57 percent to 30 percent, with 13 percent undecided. Given the margin of error, it was close to a dead heat among those who called themselves moderates – Pompeo drew 44 percent to Tiahrt’s 41 percent, with 15 percent undecided.

Pompeo showed a little better among men than women, although 8 percent more of the women were undecided.

Fifty-three percent of the men said they would vote for Pompeo and 34 percent favored Tiahrt. Twelve percent were undecided.

Among the women, Pompeo drew 47 percent to Tiahrt’s 33 percent, with 20 percent undecided.

The poll was conducted by telephone Monday through Wednesday. Those responding were asked whom they would vote for if the primary were held that day.

The survey was based on 534 respondents who said they were likely to vote in the primary. The poll called the households of 950 registered voters at random.

The winner of the primary will face Democrat Perry Schuckman in November.
