A 40-year-old man accused of mistreating a dependent adult at an Andover nursing home earlier this year made his first court appearance Monday.

Last month, the Butler County Attorney’s Office filed one felony count against Geofrey Nyangweso accusing him of mistreating the adult at the Victoria Falls Skilled Nursing Home. During Monday’s hearing, Nyangweso was ordered to give his passport to his attorney and stay in Kansas. He was released on a $50,000 bond, said Amber Norris, assistant Butler County attorney.

If found guilty, Nyangweso faces a maximum $100,000 penalty and up to 11 years and four months in prison, Norris said.

The Andover Police Department began investigating the nursing home in January. Last month, the director of the facility issued a statement saying the staff is cooperating with authorities.

Also last month, the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services issued a statement saying it had completed an investigation into Victoria Falls and cited it for failing to meet certain regulations and to investigate and self-report complaints of abuse or neglect.

A department inspection showed at least two of the 63 residents suffered verbal and physical abuse, including one targeted by at least four staff members between Sept. 1 and April 10 and another who had been repeatedly abused by a fellow resident.

The facility is facing nearly $200,000 in fines.

Nyangweso’s next court appearance has been scheduled for Aug. 11.
