Wheelspin Wheelspin: Pontiacs are coming to town

You’re going to see a lot more Pontiacs around next week – a lot.

Wichita is hosting the 42nd annual Pontiac Oakland Club International Convention, with nearly a full week’s activities slated, ranging from an all-Pontiac car show to all kinds of seminars and club meetings, as well as the always-popular drag races.

Most of the events will take place in and around Century II and the Hyatt Regency downtown. The drag racing will happen at Kansas International Dragway.

Registration and tech inspection open the festivities on Tuesday. A swap meet and model car show highlight Wednesday. Thursday is devoted largely to a variety of chapter and club meetings, but also includes the Oakland Breakfast Cruise and tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright House and Botanica.

The indoor car show is slated for Friday, along with seminars by noted Pontiac experts Jim Wangers and Roger Berry. Drag racing at Kansas International Dragway will run from 5-10 p.m. that day. Things will wrap up with car show displays, followed by the awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Wichita has proven a good venue for the POCI national convention in the past and we’re sure this one will be even better. If you like sharply styled, performance-oriented automobiles, do yourself a favor and check out one or more of the events on the schedule.

Wichita On Wheels will be there to bring you photo coverage of the goings-on. For more detailed information, go to www.poci.org and click on the 2014 convention tab.
