Connies Mexico Cafe, the oldest family-owned Mexican restaurant in Kansas, recently celebrated its 51st birthday and still prides itself on family-owned recipes and more than generous sized servings. Its not your typical chain Mexican restaurant that overdoes the decor and wrecks the ambience with loud music, low lighting and servers in bright colored garments. This is a place where you come and enjoy a well-prepared, home-cooked meal. The story of the family, headed by matriarch Carmen Rosales, has been well-published and, just in case you missed it, you will find it on the menus cover page.
DONT MISS DISHES: Known for its tasty burritos, Connies is also quite affordable. The most expensive plate, the combo fajita dinner, is still under $15, and one order of fajitas will easily feed two people if you order some extra tortillas. The burritos range from $6 to $9. The impressive looking Monterreys are $7.50-$8.50 and are loaded to the point you cant find the tostada underneath. We brought half of it home. Dessert choices are limited but diners should be sure to leave enough room for that Sombrero fried ice cream. It will feed more than a couple of people, but try to order some of the 75 cent sopapillas, too.
SERVICE: Like at most Mexican places, customers are greeted with complimentary chips and salsa. Be careful though: one of the two bottles of salsa is very hot. We were given plenty of time to order, and our food started arriving in less than 15 minutes. The servers were well versed on the menu and neatly dressed but not in any dedicated uniform.
AMBIENCE: The restaurant is well-lighted and has a section with booths and one with tables and chairs. It feels like youre eating in someones family dining room and is decorated with pictures of the owners and the restaurants history. Some furniture and floors need replacing, and the parking lot is in desperate need of resurfacing as well.
If youre looking for good authentic Mexican food, large servings, and low prices, Connies is your place. If you can keep your focus on the food and not the furniture, floor, or parking lot, youll go home muy contento (very satisfied).
