Two Wichita fan drives are being held this week. One is giving away fans to the public, while the other is taking donated fans to be distributed later.

The American Red Cross is offering about 1,200 free fans Wednesday through Friday at its Wichita location, 1900 E. Douglas. Anyone who wants to pick up a fan should bring proof of a current address and any form of identification from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“It’s first come, first serve,” said Marena Assarsson, a spokeswoman for the Midway Kansas Chapter of the Red Cross.

Fans and circulating air are especially important during the summer, Assarsson said.

“We’ve already had some high temperatures, and it’s only going to get worse,” she said. “A lot of people don’t have air conditioning or air conditioning that doesn’t cover the whole house.”

The Red Cross fan drive has been held in Wichita for about 15 years, Assarsson said, and each year there’s a long line. Older residents, small children and pregnant women can benefit the most, she said.

Cash donations from the public are used to purchase new fans from vendors in Wichita, Assarsson said.

Angels Care Home Health, a home health agency, also has a fan drive planned this week. American Legion Post No. 408 will kick off the drive by delivering cash donations and box fans from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday to the Angels Care office in Wichita.

Angels Care will also take donations of box fans from the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through June 20 and June 23-27 at its office at 8200 E. 34th St. Circle North, Building 1000, Suite 1003. The fans will be distributed after June 27 to Angels Care patients, the Medical Loan Closet – an agency that loans medical equipment to those without insurance coverage – and other medical organizations in the community while supplies last.
