— Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith was cited for driving under the influence and careless driving after an officer allegedly saw him drive into a light pole early Monday morning in Kansas City.

Kansas City police say an officer observed Smith, 26, attempting to make a left turn at 12th Street and Grand Boulevard when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a light post.

Police say Smith appeared confused and began mumbling statements the officer did not understand. The officer then asked if he needed medical attention, but Smith said he did not.

An investigation by the officer revealed the vehicle had major front end damage and undercarriage damage and the light pole was on the sidewalk and broken.

Smith was arrested, booked and cited for driving under the influence, careless driving and failure to present insurance.

The Chiefs issued a statement Tuesday regarding the alleged incident.

“We are aware of the situation involving Sean Smith. Whenever one of our players is involved in an incident like this it is disappointing. We will have no further comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter.”

Smith was at practice Tuesday as the Chiefs kicked off their third week of organized training activities. However, he took the majority of his reps with the second team as Ron Parker — a backup last year — got most of the work with the first team.

Smith signed a three-year deal worth $16.5 million with the Chiefs as a free agent last offseason. He logged 47 tackles and two interceptions last season as the Chiefs went 11-5 and made the playoffs.
