Opinion Line Extra (June 5)

It’s time to reconsider institutionalizing the severely mentally ill by force. We used to do this and we suffered few mass murders, but the ACLU successfully sued and this practice ended.

Thank you to a June 3 letter writer for the correct interpretation of the Second Amendment, and for showing the intelligence to quote the amendment as it was written and not slice and dice it to cater to the NRA and those who put “their rights” above human life.

If we are having a water problem, then quit watering golf courses. They do not have to be green. I will not vote for a tax increase while we are wasting water on golf.

The state is down $217 million in tax revenue compared with estimates for the month of May. We were down $90 million in April. If this a temporary problem created by the Obama administration, as Gov. Sam Brownback claims, then why are we lagging surrounding states in almost all economic indicators?

Secretary of State Kris Kobach calling himself a “guardian” reminds me of the old adage about the “fox guarding the henhouse.”

Lovers of the environment, notice how the airborne substance evaporates once it leaves the chimneys of the power plant. It is mostly water vapor. In our dry Kansas weather we can use all the water we can get, no matter what form.

If the Obama administration were against conservation of the lesser prairie chicken, you could bet your life Brownback and our lemming right-wing Legislature would be all in for pro-conservation efforts. It’s a good thing they have Obama. Otherwise they wouldn’t know what to be for or against.

Wake up, America. You slept through the ruination of a once-proud country in less than eight years. You were asleep while voting in the past two national elections. Is giving up five known terrorists for a possibly AWOL soldier a rational decision?

Obama trades five terrorists for a deserter who may have cost at least five good men their lives when they looked for him after he deserted. Good job, Obama.

Obama may have brought back a deserter? So what? There is nothing that says he can’t be prosecuted for desertion. I would also bet the powers that be are tracking the released terrorists. After all, it wouldn’t be right to kill them in prison, but you can kill them now.

I watched the morning news Tuesday. Obama’s prisoner swap did exactly what he wanted it to do – not one mention of the VA that I heard in the entire newscast.

It seems earlier promises are flexible because health care costs under Obamacare are rising. The effort to redefine “health care rationing” reminds us of a previous administration’s efforts to redefine the meaning of the word “is.”
