Lorrie Beck, director of the Great Plains Nature Center, will receive a national Legends Award next week in Washington, D.C., from the American Recreation Coalition.

The distinction is awarded to one manager of each of the eight agencies that oversee federal recreation facilities, which includes the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, according to a news release Wednesday from the center. Beck was selected from more than 9,000 Fish & Wildlife Service employees, the release said.

Two years ago, Beck was named director of the Great Plains Nature Center, located at East 29th Street North and Woodlawn and adjacent to Chisholm Creek Park. As director, Beck has led the Kansas Junior Duck Stamp program, the student version of the national program that makes stamps from artists’ depictions of water fowl.

Beck was also the winner of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Partners in Conservation Award earlier this year. The award, the release said, recognizes programs that exemplify innovation, build a capacity for conservation sustainability and represent excellence in conservation.

The Great Plains Nature Center is a partnership between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and the city of Wichita Department of Park and Recreation.

It’s all about adventure and outdoor education, Beck said.

The center “provides the opportunity for everyone to come in and learn about the wonderful resources we have in Kansas and across the Great Plains,” she said, “and then hopefully leave with a greater appreciation of the resources.”
