Via Christi Health’s new $85 million electronic health record system launched Sunday morning, officials said.

The system is now in operation at five Wichita hospitals and 25 clinic locations in three counties and will eventually be used at other Via Christi locations.

The system, called OneChart, integrates physician order entries and billing.

The launch came with a few small hiccups, said Abdul Bengali, Via Christi chief information officer.

“We are going through those resolutions,” he said. “Nothing major.”

Issues have included such things as glitches with nonworking IDs and passwords, as well as ensuring the system recognized and provided access to those who had proper authorization to view information.

On Sunday, which was not as busy as weekdays because clinics were not open, OneChart had more than 5,700 orders placed by clinicians. There were 422,766 total transactions in the system. Transactions include physician orders and actions by other health care providers, said Mia Kaufman, senior director of health care informatics and OneChart for Via Christi Health.

Bengali called the launch a “new era” for Via Christi.

The system is a pilot program for Ascension Health, the nation’s largest nonprofit and Catholic health care system. It acquired Via Christi last year. During the launch, Via Christi hosted visitors from other Ascension-affiliated hospitals.

“We have created a footprint for others to follow,” Bengali said.

More than 8,600 Via Christi employees were trained to use the system.

Over the weekend, Via Christi also launched a new site for patients to access their health care records, called myViaChristi. Patients must have an in-person visit to a Via Christi location to sign up and gain access to the online site.

“It helps empower patients to take care of their own health care,” Bengali said.

More than 300 patients started the registration process the first day, Bengali said.

The site can be found at www.via-christi.org/myviachristi.
