Police describe elevator accident that killed a man on Friday in Old Town, Wichita. Brian Corn, May 30, 2014.

The man killed Friday morning in what police have called a “freak accident” inside a building undergoing renovation in downtown Wichita had been in the job for only a few weeks, a relative said Sunday.

Joshua Loux, 41, died in the accident involving a freight elevator in the 100 block of North Rock Island in the Old Town District, said his uncle Mike Loux. He was killed instantly in the accident shortly before 10:30 a.m.

Joshua Loux was working for Restoration and Waterproofing Contractors, his uncle said. The company is a subcontractor with Key Construction, which is converting the space into apartments, a Key executive said Friday.

Mike Loux said his nephew had had his new job for “just a couple of weeks.” The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the city of Wichita’s Office of Central Inspection are investigating the circumstances surrounding Loux’s death.

Joshua Loux leaves behind seven children, his uncle said – three grown children and four still at home. Information on funeral arrangements has not yet been released.
