Vigilant 911 caller helps police catch liquor store burglar

An alert resident helped police nab a liquor store burglar early Tuesday morning, officials said.

A 33-year-old woman called 911 at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to report seeing a teenager breaking into the front of Lee’s Retail Liquor in the 1300 block of North Poplar, Lt. Dan East said. That’s just east of 13th and Grove in northeast Wichita.

As officers were on their way, she continued to offer “a play-by-play” of what she could see, East said. As officers arrived on the scene, the suspect was leaving the liquor store. The 15-year-old boy took off running when he saw the officers, but they caught him in the 1500 block of North Green, which is about a block northeast of the store.

The incident was “a real good example of a citizen helping us out,” East said. “She did exactly what we ask of folks: Don’t put yourself in a dangerous situation. Call 911. Tell us what you see.”
