Wingnuts closer Matt Nevarez worked out of a ninth-inning jam, allowing the Wingnuts to beat GarySouthShore 5-3 on Thursday night in Gary, Ind., the Wingnuts’ first road game of the season.

Wichita began the ninth with a 5-0 lead. Reliever Mike Zouzalik walked the leadoff batter, allowed a one-out single, then walked the next two RailCats batters to make it 5-1 before Josh Romanski singled home two more runs. Nevarez entered with runners on the corners and one out and struck out Ryan Babineau and Wally Backman Jr. to end the game.

Starter Tim Brown pitched six shutout innings. Relievers Matt Robertson and Daniel Bennett each added a scoreless inning of work.

Mike Hernandez gave Wichita a 1-0 lead in the fifth with a home run. The Wingnuts added three runs in the sixth on the strength of four consecutive hits, and made it 5-0 in the eighth when Jake Kahaulelio hit a leadoff double and was driven home by JT Wise.

The Wingnuts’ first road trip continues Friday at Gary. Right-hander Justin Klipp will start for Wichita.
