Public pools open for the season

Wichita’s nine neighborhood city pools open for the season on Monday. They are Aley at 1800 S. Seneca, Boston at 6700 E. Boston, College Hill at 304 S. Circle Dr., Evergreen at 2700 N. Woodland, Harvest at 9500 W. Provincial, Linwood at 1900 S. Hydraulic, McAdams at 1556 N. Ohio, Minisa at 1350 N. Jeanette, and Orchard at 1062 N. Clara. Admission to the pools is $2 for children 17 and under, $3 for adults, and $8 for a family of six. Coupon books also are available and offer 50 coupons for $60 or 25 for $40. Steampunk Day at Old Cowtown

Saturday is Steampunk Day at Old Cowtown Museum, 1864 W. Museum Blvd., and it will be filled with scenes straight out of a Jules Verne or H.G. Wells novel. Steampunk, according to the museum, is “Victorian science fiction that includes influences from turn-of-the-century Barnum & Bailey Carnivals.” The event will feature fans of Steampunk dressed in 19th century fashions accessorized with mechanical gadgets, goggles, gears and other pre-modern technology Visitors can see leather demonstrations, a beard and mustache competition, Steampunk crafts, fencing, vendors and more. The event, which is family-friendly, lasts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7.75 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $6 for ages 12-17, $5.50 ages for 4-11, and free for ages 4 and under. OK Kids day at nature center

Great Plains Nature Center at 6232 E. 29th St. N. is putting on an Outdoor Kansas Kids (OK Kids) event on Saturday that will take visitors back to the pioneer days to learn how Kansas’ first inhabitants lived and worked. The event, which lasts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include hands-on instruction in fishing, birdhouse building, herb planting, butter churning, old-fashioned toy making and more. Concessions will be sold from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission to the event is free. For more information, call 316-683-5499.
