Sedgwick County deputies detained a 12-year-old driver and 13-year-old passenger after a chase in which a Cadillac Escalade driven by the child hit a parked car, the Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The office gave this account: At 5:22 a.m. Sunday a dispatcher told deputies that Wichita police were dealing with a suspicious-character call near MacArthur and Broadway. A dispatcher told deputies that a person was following a black Escalade driven by their daughter. The daughter had left with the vehicle, sheriff’s Lt. David Mattingly said. Deputies found the Escalade near 47th South and Broadway and tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspect wouldn’t stop, and a pursuit ensued.

The chase continued west on 47th until deputies were told the driver was 12. Because of the driver’s age, deputies ended the pursuit, Mattingly said. The Escalade continued on to 47th and Kessler, struck a parked car and proceeded on for a couple more blocks before stopping.

The two children were turned over to Wichita police and were released to their parents, Mattingly said.
