Top seeds tumble at MVC baseball tournament

The top two seeds in the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament suffered first-round losses during Tuesday’s action in Terre Haute, Ind.

No. 8 Southern Illinois 9, No. 1 Evansville 1 — SIU knocked out MVC Pitcher of the Year Kyle Freeland in five innings by scoring four runs on five hits and three walks. Freeland entered the game with nine walks in 13 previous starts. SIU’s Ryan Casillas homered to start a five-run seventh inning for the Salukis.

No. 3 Dallas Baptist 3, No. 6 Missouri State 2 (10) — Dallas Baptist’s Drew Turbin hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 10th off Bears starter Clay Murphy. Cy Sneed held the Bears to five hits and no earned runs over nine innings.

No. 7 Bradley 6, No. 2 Indiana State 2 — The Braves added another upset to an underdog day by knocking the host Sycamores into the losers bracket. Max Murphy hit a two-run home run to put the Braves up 4-0 in the third inning. Eliot Ashbeck scattered nine hits and allowed two runs over eight innings.
