On all the lists

WSU first baseman Casey Gillaspie is one of 35 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy after two rounds of voting. The award goes to the nation’s top player and is administered by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Illinois State second baseman Paul DeJong is also on the list. Finalists will be announced on June 5 and the winner on June 14.

Earlier this week, Gillaspie was named one of 30 players on the Golden Spikes Award watch list, USA Baseball’s honor for the nation’s top amateur player.

Injury report

Freshman lefty Cody Tyler will undergo ligament reconstruction elbow surgery (commonly known as Tommy John surgery) later this month, WSU coach Todd Butler said.

Tyler reported the injury after pitching against Kansas, his lone start, on April 29. He made 10 appearances this season and compiled a 7.27 ERA with11 strikeouts and eight walks in 8 2/3 innings.

Worth noting

WSU sophomore Tanner Kirk started for the first time since April 22 against Missouri and singled in his first at-bat, his first hit since April 19 against Southern Illinois. Zair Koeiman sat out with an injured hand. He may be able to play Friday, Butler said.… WSU starter A.J. Ladwig threw 97 pitches and will throw against Wednesday in WSU’s second game of the MVC Tournament.… The Shockers won their sixth game with a shutout, first since a 7-0 win over Bradley on May 3. It was their third shutout in a conference series opener. The Redbirds were shut out for the third time this season. A 12-0 loss at Evansville started their four-game losing streak.
