A local burglary ring used social media and newspaper announcements to target homes that would be unoccupied at certain times, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.

In a statement, the office said three Wichita men have been found guilty for their roles in a burglary ring targeting homes in Wichita and Sedgwick County.

Adam Dwyer, 34, his brother Brian Dwyer, 37, and Daniel Maupin, 39, have pleaded guilty to a combined 27 felony counts, including burglary, theft and identity theft, the office said.

Wichita police think the ring used social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, and newspaper announcements to target residences that would be unoccupied at specific times, the office said.

Asked for clarification about how the burglars used the information, DA spokesman Dan Dillon said in an e-mail: “The three men used information that was published or posted on social media (Facebook) to determine when people would be away from their homes, then planned burglaries at those homes. As for the newspaper, they obtained their information from the weddings and engagements section.”

In one case, the three burglarized a Wichita home while the family was on vacation, the statement said. The losses, which included guns and electronics, exceeded $40,000.

In another instance, the office said, the three were connected to two burglaries while the occupants were at a wedding.

Wichita police detectives and county sheriff’s detectives investigated the cases.
