A young mother needed to take her husband to work late Tuesday morning, but didn’t want to take their toddler along.

“Since the little guy was sleeping, she thought it would be OK to leave him – which is not the case,” Wichita police officer Bart Norton said.

The 18-year-old woman left the slumbering toddler in a bedroom closet in their third-floor apartment at Twin Rivers Apartments in 2300 block of North Somerset, authorities said. The apartments are northeast of 21st and Amidon.

The child was discovered by a maintenance man who entered the apartment to do some work. The child may have been left alone for perhaps 20 minutes before being discovered, Norton said. His mother was taking her husband to a job on West 21st Street, he said.

No arrests are planned in the case, he said. The child has been placed in the temporary custody of a grandmother while the Department for Children and Families works with the couple on parenting issues.

“They’re going to try to get some extra resources,” Norton said of DCF.

Both parents work full-time, he said.

“They are trying, but their paychecks just don’t go far enough,” Norton said.
