A reason to watch scores
As is almost always the case, Bradley showed up on Wichita States schedule to give the Shockers a boost up the conference standings.
While it may seem unlikely, given their struggles with injuries and hitting, the Shockers can make themselves a factor in the MVC race.
Now they must prove they can beat teams other than last-place Bradley and Southern Illinois. WSU is in a three-way tie for third, one game behind second-place Illinois State and two behind first-place Evansville.
Im going by the Jimmy Valvano thing Survive and advance, WSU coach Todd Butler said. Sometimes we might not play the cleanest game. Sometimes we might not pitch the cleanest game or hit as well as we should, but its just about winning games.
Valvanos North Carolina State basketball team won the 1983 NCAA title in one of the sports great underdog stories. WSU baseballs ambitions arent that grand. But with third-place Dallas Baptist up next weekend and a trip to second-place Illinois State on deck, the Shockers can make a move. It helps that first-place Evansville plays Illinois State this weeked, a series that could further tighten the standings.
Weve put ourselves with a very good chance, WSU sophomore Tanner Dearman said. We just have to put wins together.
WSU first baseman Casey Gillaspie stole a career-high two bases. He is eight for eight this season, second on the team behind Dearmans 20 WSU swept Bradley for the sixth straight season (excluding 2009 when they played once due to weather) and the eighth straight time at Eck Stadium. In 1996, Bradley won a regular-season game at Eck Stadium to hold off a sweep in a four-game series. It also defeated WSU in the MVC Tournament that season, its last win over the Shockers in Wichita Gillaspie hit .600 on the weekend with two home runs and four walks. He is 17 for 32 (.531) in nine games against Bradley in his career WSUs Zair Koeiman hit .444 to raise his average to .258. He is 9 for 27 (.333) since rejoining the starting lineup eight games ago Shockers catcher Tyler Baker threw out three of five would-be stealers and has nabbed 17 of 37 this season Lefty Kris Gardner will start on Tuesday against Kansas State in WSUs final non-conference game of the season. The game starts at 7 p.m. and is on ESPNU.
