Wichita police found a house in flames and a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound in his thigh Saturday morning, an official said.
Fire investigators have determined that it was arson, fire Lt. Troy Thissen said. He said he couldn’t provide information on how the fire was set, and police Sgt. John Hoofer said he could give only limited information about the shooting. It’s not clear whether the shooting and fire are related, Hoofer said. Officials are expected to provide more information on Monday.
Police arrived first and helped people get out of the burning house, in the 1300 block of North Pershing, near 13th and Oliver, officials said. Nine people, apparently including the shooting victim, were inside, Hoofer said. The incident was reported at 4:10 a.m.
On Saturday afternoon, a man in the front yard of the charred house said he is the owner and that people had been playing dominoes and cards inside.
“I just lost a house,” he said. He wouldn’t give his name. “The Red Cross is helping me out.”
Thissen estimated the damage to the structure and contents at $30,000. Most of the damage occurred in the living room area, he said.
