A Wichita man was beaten and hospitalized Thursday after declining to give a cigarette to his attacker, police said.

The victim, 56, told police later that he went to the QuikTrip at Lincoln and Hydraulic to buy cigarettes at about 9 p.m. on Thursday, Wichita police Lt. Dan East said. Another man approached him and asked for a cigarette, East said.

The victim left the store, walked north on Greenwood and was attacked and hit on the head from behind, East said. The victim told police that the attacker hit him with an unknown object, knocked him down, beat and kicked him, and told him he intended to take his money, East said. The victim was then beaten unconscious, East said.

He was taken by ambulance to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph and treated for head injuries, East said.
