Weekend events: Free comic books, World Penguin Day celebration

Zoo celebrating World Penguin Day

Saturday is World Penguin Day, and the Sedgwick County Zoo at 5555 Zoo Blvd. will observe it from 10 to 4 p.m. with penguin-centric activities, crafts and keeper chats. Chats and feedings are will happen at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Admission is $13.95, or $11.95 for ages 62 and older, $8.95 for ages 3 to 11 and free for ages 2 and under and members. Kid Fest at Century II

The 18th annual Kid Fest, a day full of activities for children, is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Century II Expo Hall. Visitors will be able to meet Iron Man, bounce on giant inflatables, visit a petting zoo, play video games and more. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Child ID Center also will be set up. Admission is $6, or $2 for ages 10 and under. Free kid passes are available at local Kwik Shops.

Saturday is Free Comic Book Day

The first Saturday in May is known across the nation as Free Comic Book Day, and it’ll be observed in Wichita, too. Prairie Dog Comics at 4800 W. Maple is participating by offering two free comic books to anyone who stops in the store between 10:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Those who buy comic books can get another freebie for each book they buy. Nationally known comic book artist Kevin Nowlan also will be in the store for a signing. He’ll be doing head sketches in exchange for a donation to the Stan Sakai Fund. For more information, call 316-942-3456.
