Maize superintendent Doug Powers is no longer a candidate for superintendent of schools in Fayetteville, Ark.

Arkansas media reported that Paul Hewitt, an associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Arkansas, was named to the district’s top post Tuesday.

Powers, who had been in talks with the Fayetteville, Ark., school district, said the position piqued his interest because the district is about slightly larger than Maize. Fayetteville has about 9,400 students and Maize about 7,000. Powers has led Maize schools since 2009.
