Wichita State’s men’s golf team won its seventh straight Missouri Valley Conference title on Tuesday, defeating Illinois State by three shots.
The Shockers carded a final-round 284, the low round for the tournament, to finish with a 22-over-par 874. Illinois State finished with a 286 to total 877 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. The Shockers qualified for a spot in an NCAA regional.
WSU’s Chandler Rusk defeated Illinois State’s Tyler Gentilella on the third playoff hole to earn medalist honors. Both finished with a 215. WSU’s Louis Cohen Boyer finished fourth (218) with Alec Heinen tied for fifth with a 221. Grant Bennett tied for 10th with a 224 and Calvin Pearson tied for 20th (228).
Boyer earned MVC Golfer of the Year honors and Bennett, a freshman, was named Newcomer of the Year. Rusk, Boyer and Heinen earned spots on the All-MVC team and Heinen was named the MVC’s Elite 18 winner. Grier Jones was named Coach of the Year for the seventh straight time and 12th in his career.
Regional assignments will be announced Monday. The NCAA Championships will be held My 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson and hosted by WSU.
