Police: Woman reports man posing as Protection One employee

A 24-year-old woman called police late Saturday to report a suspicious character.

The call occurred at 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 5400 block of South St. Francis, near Broadway and 55th Street South.

The woman told police a man in his 20s came to her residence and identified himself as a Protection One employee. He tried to convince her that Protection One had bought Vivint Security, the provider for her residential alarm, according to Sgt. Ed Brower, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

She told the man that she had her alarm installed last Thursday and that Vivint had told her individuals would try to tell her this to case her house. The man took off running; officers were unable to locate the man.

“If you are ever in doubt, call the alarm company and ask for a representative to verify what is going on,” Brower said. “Obviously, at 11:30 at night, a representative is not going to come by to contact you. There were a lot of red flags here. She did a good job of calling his bluff.”
