Vice President Joe Biden's son will run for governor of Delaware, and if he wins he's likely to become part of the national political conversation about up and coming stars.

Joe Biden has long been in the national spotlight. Elected to the Senate at 1972 at age 29 (he was 30 when he took his seat), he sought the presidency in 1988 and 2008. His efforts fell way short, but as a Senate veteran he had the stature that caught Barack Obama's eye.

Biden became vice president in 2009, and is thought to be considering a 2016 presidential bid. But polls routinely show him far behind front-runner Hillary Clinton.

Beau Biden, 45, should he win the governorship in 2016, would probably be listed as one of the party's stars of the future.

The state's attorney general for the past eight years, he said on his web site he would not seek another term as attorney general this year so he could work on the 2016 gubernatorial race.

"Over the past few months, as I’ve been planning to run for reelection, I have also been giving a great deal of thought to running for Governor in 2016," Biden wrote. "What started as a thought–a very persistent thought–has now become a course of action that I wish to pursue.

"After careful consideration, I have concluded that it is not right to ask for your support in 2014, knowing that my focus would be divided between doing my job as Attorney General while at the same time running as a candidate for Governor."
