An altercation near a downtown Wichita park late Monday night culminated in a man suffering a serious stab wound, police said.

Officers were called to the 200 block of South St. Francis at about 9 p.m. Monday, where witnesses reported a clash between two men, Lt. Steve Kenney said. They told police one had stabbed the other in the right side.

The 39-year-old victim was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, Kenney said, where he was found to have a puncture wound to his liver requiring surgery. A 22-year-old suspect was arrested about two hours later in connection with the incident, records show.

The incident occurred south of Naftzger Park, Kenney said, not in the park itself. Authorities had previously reported the incident occurred in the park.
