Gray received the Charles and Joanne McIlwaine Foundation Scholarship, which goes to an East student who also is an Eagle Scout and plans to attend KU.

Charles McIlwaine, who died in 2006, was a 1957 graduate of East High and an Eagle Scout. He graduated from KU and went on to become vice president of the Coleman Co.
