A Manhattan man is facing a charge in Sedgwick County District Court alleging he molested a 5-year-old earlier this month.
Michael W. Rodman, 34, is charged with one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child involving the “lewd fondling or touching” of the 5-year-old on April 5. He made his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon to hear a reading of the charge and request a court-appointed attorney.
Wichita police records show Rodman was taken into custody at 10:44 p.m. Sunday, about an hour and a half after a 30-year-old woman told authorities the man lowered the child’s pants and underwear on April 5 and made the child “touch his genitalia.”
He was booked into Sedgwick County Jail about five hours after his arrest, online jail booking records show. He is being held on $250,000 bond.
Rodman is due back in court for a preliminary hearing April 23. He identified himself as a Manhattan resident in a financial affidavit filed with the court.
Kansas Department of Corrections records show Rodman was paroled after spending a little more than four years in prison following a 2002 conviction for aggravated indecent liberties with an 8-year-old in Sedgwick County. His sentence expired in 2009.
Under current law, aggravated indecent liberties with a child is a Jessica’s Law crime, which mandates a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 25 years upon conviction. It is named after a 2005 child sex crime and murder case from Florida.
Rodman, records show, is a registered sex offender.
