A 22-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he tried to steal tools from one house in north Wichita and then stole a television from another residence down the block, police said

The man knocked on the door of a house in the 2000 block of North Madison at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. Dan East said. When a 13-year-old boy answered the door, the suspect walked in and asked for gas money.

He then claimed tools lying on a table belonged to him, East said. When the boy went to get an adult elsewhere in the house, the suspect left – but not before stealing items from a car parked in the driveway.

A witness watched the man walk south and go into an unlocked house, where he removed a television, East said. Officers alerted to the incident found and arrested the man in the 1700 block of North Minneapolis.

The stolen property was returned to the owners, East said.
