Federal authorities’ recent three-day sweep in Liberal that targeted immigration fugitives and criminals resulted in 19 arrests.

The effort in the southwest Kansas town was conducted last week by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, according to an ICE news release.

Of the 19 arrested, 18 were illegal immigrants who had criminal convictions that included drug trafficking and manufacturing, aggravated assault, burglary, domestic assault, driving under the influence and illegal re-entry after deportation.

The group also included five immigration fugitives who had outstanding orders of deportation, the release said. Seventeen were men and two were women.

Eleven of those arrested were from Mexico, seven from Guatemala and one from Honduras.

In fiscal year 2013, 82 percent of the nearly 369,000 illegal immigrants removed by ICE from the United States had previously been convicted of a criminal offense, the release said.
