A semitrailer truck crashed into an unmanned tollbooth early Saturday on the Kansas Turnpike near Tonganoxie, killing a 30-year-old Aurora, Colo., man.

The victim, identified as Sergiy Angelchev in a Kansas Turnpike Authority crash report, was ejected from the semi and declared dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 3 a.m. when the truck ran into the tollbooth on westbound Interstate 70 in Leavenworth County.

A 25-year-old man in the semi, Roman Ilyaich, was critically injured. He is also of Aurora, Colo., according to the Turnpike Authority report.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the truck was traveling at highway speeds and didn’t slow down before crashing into the tollbooth. The truck’s engine landed about 50 yards from the booth.

The patrol said no one was in the booth, which is unmanned at night.

Two of the three entry lanes to the turnpike were closed for an investigation. The only lane that remained open was the K-Tag lane. All drivers could use that lane until the other two lanes were reopened, a Kansas Turnpike official said.
