A Wichita substitute teacher jailed in September on suspicion of child sex crimes involving a 15-year-old girl pleaded guilty this week to lesser charges.
Jarrod Alan Acquistapace, 31, is set for sentencing May 22 on two counts of indecent liberties with a child, said Georgia Cole, spokeswoman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. He was originally charged with a single count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, alleging he had sex with the girl in August 2013 – a crime that would have drawn 55 to 61 months in prison for a person with little to no criminal history.
The reduced charges accuse Acquistapace of lewdly touching the girl during their encounter, which may make him eligible for either imprisonment or probation under the state’s sentencing guidelines.
Cole said the plea was entered Monday, the same day Acquistapace was scheduled for jury trial in the case.
Wichita school officials said last year that Acquistapace’s name was included on the district’s substitute teacher database from Sept. 21, 2011, to Oct. 2, 2013, but would not disclose how often he worked or at which schools. He remains in Sedgwick County Jail awaiting his next court date.
