The best regular season in Wichita State basketball history isn’t going to fade away quietly if Wichita City Council members get their way.

Council members directed Mayor Carl Brewer Tuesday to “get those guys down here” for a formal celebration of the Shockers’ 35-1 campaign.

No date was set, but Brewer said city officials are working with the university to get that done.

Brewer and several council members praised the Shockers’ performance this year, particularly in a 78-76 loss to preseason No. 1 Kentucky on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis.

“We are extremely proud of them,” Brewer said.

The mayor noted the role of Coach Gregg Marshall and the team as the city’s lead marketers, reflecting on his recent trip to the National League of Cities meeting in Washington, D.C.

“It’s the first time we've walked into a conference with mayors from across the United States and everyone wants to talk about the Shockers,” Brewer said.

“The quality that Coach Marshall has done representing our city ... and the way they've got those players ... they represent the city so professionally,” Vice Mayor Pete Meitzner chimed in.

“I hope the rest of the city can win like they win.”
