A walk home for a 35-year-old man ended with a trip to the hospital Thursday night after he was badly beaten by a group of men who wanted his backpack, police said.

The attack occurred at about 11 p.m. Thursday at West Street and West Court, Lt. Dan East said. That’s just north of Pawnee and West in southwest Wichita.

The victim told police he was walking home when he saw three men in their 20s get out of a four-door Mercury that was light blue or silver in color. They asked him for the backpack he was carrying, but he refused to give it to them.

They then began punching and kicking him, but he did not surrender his backpack, East said. They then left.

He was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of injuries that included a broken nose, possible facial fractures, bruises and a large cut on his face that required stitches, according to a police document.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the attack, East said. They can call detectives at 316-268-4191 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Tips can also be sent online at www.WichitaCrimeStoppers.com or via mobile phone by texting TIP217 then the message to CRIMES (274637).
