It can be difficult to get much done on a normal Friday afternoon. But with the state’s three major universities all playing in the NCAA basketball tournament, job productivity may go out the window.

The University of Kansas will be the first to take the court, tipping off against Eastern Kentucky at 3:10 p.m. The Jayhawks, which are the second seed in the South regional, are making their 25th consecutive tournament appearance and are hoping that their young squad can carry the school to another Final Four.

Wichita State, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest regional, is slated to play at 6:10 p.m. against Cal Poly. The Shockers are eager to prove to any remaining doubters – who are these people? – that they are every bit as good as their 34-0 record. Go, Shocks.

Kansas State, the ninth seed in the Midwest, plays at 8:40 p.m. against Kentucky. K-State received a tough draw, but as the Wildcats showed this year in wins against KU and other quality opponents, they are capable of beating anybody.

If the teams win Friday, they will play again Sunday – with the marquee match-up of WSU versus K-State. In addition, the conference champion women Shockers will begin their tournament play Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against Penn State.

So it will be an entire weekend of basketball excitement. Let the madness begin.

For the editorial board, Phillip Brownlee
