Hutch women in NJCAA semis; Butler eliminated

Hutchinson advanced to the final four with a 10-point victory, but Butler was eliminated with a 10-point loss Thursday in the NJCAA women’s tournament in Salina.

Jamie Patrick scored 23 points for Hutchinson, which defeated Tyler (Texas) 87-77. Kalani Purcell added 26 points and 11 rebounds for Hutchinson, which will face Chipola (Fla.) on Friday at 8 p.m.

Hutchinson trailed by six at halftime, but a decisive 10-0 run from the 6:34 mark to 4:11 but the Blue Dragons up 70-60.

Also playing a big role in Hutch’s victory was Jen Von Ta Hill, who had 20 points and five steals. Hill, Patrick and Purcell combined for 69 of Hutch’s 87 total. Shakira Harding added 13.

Chipola eliminated Butler 64-54.

Te’era Williams paced Butler with 24 points and eight rebounds.

The Grizzlies were trying to advance to the women’s semifinals for the first time in the school’s history. They finished with the top record in school history, 34-3.

Down 22-16 at halftime, Butler scored four straight points to open the second half on baskets by Te’era Williams and Shayla Williams, getting to with two points.

Ashlee Ivy’s layup tied the game for Butler at 24-24 with 16:10 to play.

After a basket and a free throw by Ashley Gibson, Butler again gained a tie at 31-31. It was here that Te’era Williams dominated, scoring nine straight points to give the Grizzlies a 40-34 lead with 9:18 to go.

Chipola, however, would score six straight points to tie the game and then, with the Grizzlies up 44-43, made consecutive three-pointers to go ahead 49-44 with 6:04 to go.
