The drug deal may have misfired late Tuesday night, but the assailant’s gun did not. As a result, police say, he ended up shooting himself in the leg.

Two men met for a drug transaction at about 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of South Pinecrest, Lt. Dan East said. That’s near Southeast High School.

An 18-year-old man told police the 19-year-old suspect pointed a gun at him during the proposed deal, East said. The victim pushed the gun away during the scuffle that ensued, and the gun went off.

The bullet struck the suspect in the right leg near the knee, East said. He was taken to Wesley Medical Center in serious condition.

Investigators aren’t yet sure what drugs were involved in the planned transaction, East said. No arrests have been made in the case, he said, but charges could still result from the ongoing investigation.
