Wichita State will receive a check for $100,000 for playing Memphis on ESPN next season in Sioux Falls, S.D., according to senior associate athletic director Darron Boatright.

The game is scheduled to be played in the Sanford Pentagon on Nov. 18, according to a news release from the arena.

“Part of building the Pentagon and this whole complex was to bring attention to Sioux Falls,” Pentagon general manager Eric Larsen told the Sioux Falls Business Journal. “When you’ve got the coach of Wichita State talking about Sioux Falls and the Pentagon on the eve of the NCAA Tournament … I think that’s pretty major.”

The Pentagon is a 3,200-seat arena that opened in 2013. Wisconsin and St. John’s played there in November and the game sold out.

“They have a nice arena, and they're paying us both a lot of money to be there,” Marshall told Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com. “So we're taking Wichita State and Memphis to South Dakota, and we're going to sell it out. Two of the best non-BCS team in the country at a neutral-site early in the season. It's going to be great.”

Marshall said criticism of WSU’s schedule played a role in agreeing to the game.

“We've been crucified for our schedule … even though we played five non-conference games against teams that are in the NCAA Tournament, which is more than anybody else in our region,” Marshall said. “The problem with our schedule was our conference schedule, and we can't do anything about that. But we have set out to schedule even better.”
