Butler women roll in NJCAA opener

Butler beat Southwest Mississippi 69-31 on Monday in the first round of the NJCAA women tournament at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.

Butler’s defense was stifling — Southwest Mississippi made 9 of 58 shots (15.5 percent). Its starting guards combined to make 2 of 30.

Butler scored the game’s first seven points, went ahead 14-3before the game was six minutes old and led 28-7 with 5:54 left in the first half. Southwest Mississippi managed to whittle the lead to 16 before halftime, but Butler restored a 20-point advantage in the opening minutes of the second half and never let it get closer.

The Grizzlies Teera Williams had a game-high 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, blocked three shots and made three steals. Ashlee Ivy added 14 points, Ashley Gibbs scored 10 and Teanna Reid had nine points and seven assists.

Butler will play Shelton State at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the second round.

Trinity Valley (Texas) 68, Pratt men 65 — Pratt’s defense held another opponent under 70 points, but the Greenbacks couldn’t pull off the win in the opening round of the NJCAA men’s tournament in Hutchinson.

Pratt (22-13) won the Region VI tournament in Wichita on the strength of its defense, holding four consecutive opponents under 71. On Monday it held Trinity Valley (28-6) to 68 points and 39.7 percent shooting, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Kevin Allen had 31 points and 17 rebounds for Pratt.
