Police are still investigating a crash that killed four people and sent a fifth person to the hospital in critical condition Saturday evening.

On Sunday, police had not released the names of victims or any additional details, saying more information would come this week.

A dark-colored Ford Escape crashed into a concrete barrier, tipped on its nose and caught fire along Oliver on the bridge that spans East Kellogg.

A Wichita police officer who arrived first on the scene was able to pull one woman out of the car to safety after the crash that happened at 7:43 p.m.

The woman, who is in her 30s, was transported to Wesley Medical Center, where she underwent surgery, police said Saturday night.

The victims ranged in age from 20 to 40. They were acquaintances, and most were from the Wichita area, police said.

An officer at the crash scene late Saturday said witnesses reported seeing the vehicle traveling west on Kellogg Drive, the access road along Kellogg, at “a high rate of speed” before hitting a curb.

The SUV then crossed all lanes of traffic and collided with a short concrete barrier separating the street from a pedestrian walkway across the bridge, according to witnesses, police said Saturday. The impact forced the car up on its nose before it caught fire, the officer said.

No other vehicles were involved.
